The principal of an MCD school where a five year-old nursery student drowned in an uncovered septic tank a week ago was arrested Tuesday afternoon, said police.
But Rekha Kakkar, principal of MCD school number 2 in Kapashera area, was released on bail a few hours later, added the police. Kakkar, who was suspended following a preliminary inquiry by South Municipal Corporation, was arrested after the police received a report from the civic body, said JCP (southwestern range) Dependra Pathak.
Nursery student Ankit had drowned in the septic tank near the school’s toilet on January 27. The child had gone to the toilet and is suspected to have fallen into the tank, according to police.
Sources said the civic body’s report to the police stated PWD officials had informed Kakkar about the septic tank not having a cover. The civic body has also stated that the principal was responsible for all the work. “It was her duty to ensure that the sewage tank was covered and even after reminders, it wasn’t,” said a police officer.
Police have registered a case under Section 304-A (causing death by negligence).
