Now,govt takes legal literacy to rural areas

In an attempt to spread awareness about legal rights and laws among the illiterate and the poor,the Delhi government has initiated a Legal Literacy programme for the rural areas of Delhi.

In an attempt to spread awareness about legal rights and laws among the illiterate and the poor,the Delhi government has initiated a Legal Literacy programme for the rural areas of Delhi.

The programme,which was inaugurated on Saturday by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit in Daulatabad village near Najafgarh,is being held in collaboration with the Delhi High Court Legal Services Committee.

While inaugurating the programme in the presence of newly-elected Member of Parliament Mahabal Mishra and MLAs Somesh Shokeen and Bharat Singh,Dikshit said legal experts along with students will be visiting homes in the village at regular intervals to spread awareness.

She also stressed upon the need of sensitising police personnel and organising camps for all concerned officers to make them more responsible in dealing with those who find it difficult to comprehend the legal system.

Delhi High Court Legal Services Committee chairman Justice Madan B Lokur,Delhi Bar Council chairman K C Mittal and several law students were present on the occasion.

Dikshit added the programme was in line with the Legal Literacy Mission inaugurated by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in 2005.
