Granting relief to traders, the North Municipal Corporation has exempted those operating in commercial areas established before 1962 from conversion and parking charges.

Certain commercial units had been facing demolition and sealing over non-compliance of the Master Plan. These areas in Old Delhi,Karol Bagh and Paharganj had been notified under the Master Plan-1962.

During a sealing drive in 2007,traders were asked to submit proof of businesses prior to 1962 to be exempt from sealing. But the traders were not able to submit any proof. The corporation, which too did not have the records, sought clarification from the Additional Solicitor General. It decided to exempt all traders in these areas from conversion, parking charges.

“Now they can run their businesses without fear,” Mahender Nagpal, leader of the House, said.

The areas that will benefit from the exemption include Jama Masjid,Chitli Kabar,Sitaram Bazar,Ajmeri Gate,Chandni Chowk,Fatehpur,Lajpat Rai Market,Kashmere Gate,Mori Gate,Malka Ganj and Sabzi Mandi.

Commissioner P K Gupta said orders were being issued to all officers to freeze punitive action against traders who submit proof of business.
