The North civic agency is looking to legalise unauthorised additions to building such as balconies and projections above windows (chajja).
Leader of the House (North corporation) Mahendra Nagpal said the building by-laws are very complex at present,and a reform will help make them easier.
The unauthorised additions to property are torn down by the Engineering and Enforcement department of the civic agencies. The residents have been protesting against such demolitions.
“People invest in the houses they live in and with extension of family,they try to extend the house. Such balconies should be legalised and the corporation should charge for the extended structure,” Nagpal said.
“We are not promoting illegal construction in the city,but we do want that officials should spare those who have recently extended their balconies and chajjas. The extended portions might be the need of the hour,as it is imperative for those living in such colonies to have shade from rain and excessive sunlight,” Nagpal said.
Chairman of the Standing Committee (North corporation) Yogendra Chandolia said: “Even the Minister for Urban Development has agreed that vertical growth is the need of the hour. We know that there is a dearth of land in the Capital. If these extended portions can be regularised,it will benefit 90 per cent of the population living in municipal corporation areas.”
