Come December, passenger flights are expected to start taking off from the Noida International Airport at Jewar. The airport, which after the complete expansion will be the country’s largest, was earlier expected to start basic operations by the end of September.

“Four domestic flights will be operational by December 29. By February, more flights will be flying out regularly,” said Arun Vir Singh, CEO, Noida International Airport Limited (NIAL).

One of the roadblocks in the operationalisation of the airport, however, is the second phase of environmental clearance.

“The first stage of clearance required prior to its construction was already given by the MOEFCC (Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change) but the clearance prior to operations is pending,” Singh said.

One of the reasons for the pending clearance is the planned translocation of 111 animals, including blackbucks, peafowl and deer from what will be the airport premises. “They have to be translocated before the operation begins,” Singh added.

The under-construction airport is 15 kilometres away from the Dhanauri wetland site which is an eco-sensitive zone but has not been designated as a Ramsar site. “All the animals have to be shifted to Dhanauri. We have a grace period of three months to get the environmental clearance. We will get it soon,” he said.

The airport is being developed by the Yamuna International Airport Pvt Ltd (YIAPL), a fully-owned subsidiary of Zurich Airport International AG.

The foundation stone of this six-runway airport was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in November 2021. In June, the construction of the airport was hit because of delays in the delivery of construction material and equipment due to global supply chain constraints.

Singh said Tuesday that work on the runway and lighting is complete while some work in the terminal building is still ongoing.

“As soon as work in the terminal building is completed, the work for the flight operations will begin,” said Singh.
