Noida: Hit by car on Diwali night, septuagenarian dies

A senior police official said that IPC Section 307 (attempt to murder) has been added in the FIR, apart from Section 279 (rash driving) and 338 (causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others).

A septuagenarian named Vijay Kumar, who was among three people critically injured in a hit-and-run accident on Diwali evening, succumbed to the injuries Saturday. He was admitted to the ICU in a private hospital and was on the ventilator.

Along with Kumar, 72, his son Saurabh Singh, 43, and an eight-year-old girl Sharanya Khatana were hit by a car in front of Eldeco Amantaran society in Noida’s Sector-119 while taking part in Diwali festivities last Sunday.

The car hit Singh and the girl and they fell on the ground, but Kumar was dragged on its bonnet for a few metres. While the girl was discharged from the hospital Wednesday, both the father and the son were in hospital due to serious injuries.

“We had planned to go outside to eat on Diwali… and the children were insisting on watching the firecrackers. Thus, we stopped at the gate and the car rammed into people…” said Kamesh Khatana, father of Sharanya Khatana and friend of Saurabh Singh.

A person named Vikas Yadav, a resident of Sorkha village and the driver of the red hatchback car that hit the trio, was arrested in the case.
