In an attempt to woo 12 per cent of Delhis electorate, the Delhi unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party on Sunday made a last ditch effort to show that it was inclusive of the Muslim population.
At a convention held at the Talkatora Stadium, the partys Delhi unit unveiled its progressive agenda for development and welfare of the of Muslim community.
With Muslim voters forming 12 per cent of the electorate in the upcoming Assembly elections, the BJP seems to be making efforts to reach out to them. It has promised development of madrasas and the appointment of non-political personalities in Wakf Board.
The Delhi BJP chief Vijay Goels slogan No rift, only love set the tone for the convention.
He spoke of the partys agenda for Muslims in Delhi, which included upgrading education facilities, providing greater employment opportunities through skill development, training and credit facilities, giving the adequate share in housing schemes meant for EWS (economically weaker sections),and overhauling of infrastructure in areas under the management of Wakf Board,Delhi Haj Committee,Urdu Academy and Minority Development Financial Corporation.
Goel also spoke of reviving Urdu in Delhis schools. Urdu needs to be introduced as an optional subject in Delhi government and NDMC schools and all vacant posts of Urdu teachers must be filled,he said.
He slammed the Congress government for not making any significant changes in the socio-economic conditions of Muslims. The areas, which have a concentration of minority communities, are in horrible condition with complete collapse of infrastructure, Goel said.
He said the BJP would open polytechniques and well-equipped schools in such areas and ensure planned development there. It seems the Congress has deliberately turned such areas into ghettos. It is time to stop treating Muslims as vote banks, Goel said.
Addressing the convention,BJPs national vice-president,Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said the Congress government was ensuring that Muslims lived below the poverty line.
The so-called secular parties have ensured that half of the Muslim population lives below the poverty line. To garner votes, the Congress and so-called secular parties are propagating misconceptions about the BJP. The BJP believes in development of Muslims and we will soon come out with a vision document that addresses various issues concerning Muslims, Naqvi said.
