Three persons who allegedly thrashed constable Vinod Kumar in a jungle in Ghitorni village on the night of Friday and Saturday, have been identified and detained by police.
The three, police sources said, are part of the family of three brothers and their cousin who have been running the illegal liquor racket for the last 15 years.
The three men who were detained have been identified as Yogi,Anil and Neetu. Pawan who was arrested on Saturday night, told police that he and his brothers had been running the racket for several years. He also said that for a tax concession, they would buy liquor in Haryana and supply it in Delhi.
Police, however, claimed that the brothers were not part of a liquor mafia, but were just one family running an illegal liquor business.
Police sources said the family has been booked for nine cases earlier and in all cases, they brought in less than 100 quarters of country made liquor.
Police said the brothers usually smuggled small quantities of liquor to evade arrest. However, police sources said when the team comprising constable Vinod Kumar and and Sokhinder intercepted their vehicle, the accused identified the policemen as they had been arrested earlier.
Police said no liquor had been recovered from Pawan yet. Even the Wagon R that he travelled in had not been traced. Police said the man with Pawan had managed to escape.
While it is believed that the brothers are part of a gang of a liquor mafia,DCP (South) B S Jaiswal maintained that there was no liquor mafia and that the racket was being run on an individual basis.
