Nine injured as lift crashes in New Delhi House

A senior police officer said the incident took place and the 14 persons inside had taken the lift to reach the eighth and tenth floors. As many as 14 people were trapped inside for around five minutes.

“Around 2.10 pm,they went inside lift number four of the building,but the lift suddenly stopped and fell from the second floor to the ground floor. However,since the springs at the ground floor were strong enough,the impact wasn’t severe and those inside received minor injuries” a senior police officer said.

The building’s security guard said: “The lights went off suddenly and the victims began screaming for help. We were sitting at the building’s entrance when we heard a loud crash. We immediately went inside the building and found that the lift had crashed and there were people trapped inside.”

The police received a call at 2.25 pm,following which police personnel,a CATS ambulance and fire tenders were rushed to the spot. “We cordoned off the ground floor. The victims were brought out after the technician dropped a ladder into the lift. All of them were taken to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital,where they were discharged after minor first aid,” the officer said.

H M Prabhaker,president of the Association of Apartment Owners of New Delhi House,said in a statement: “The builder MGM International Pvt Ltd has caused sabotage in the lifts inside the building New Delhi House and his persons first jammed the lifts on the second floor of the building and then closed the doors of the lifts all of a sudden,due to which the lift fell to the ground floor,thereby creating panic amongst the occupants of the lift.”

Police said no case was registered as no official complaint was filed at the Barakhamba Road police station.
