The Internet is gaining respect as a medium for campaigning among political parties. With the general elections round the corner, politicians are trying to carve their niche on the World Wide Web to spread their message among voters.

The Delhi BJP is planning to launch a special Delhi-specific portal, focusing upon its candidates in the Capital for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls. According to party sources,it would be launched within the next two weeks.

“We would be focusing upon the profiles and pictures of the seven candidates from Delhi. All the latest press releases, details of upcoming events and the party’s election manifesto would also feature on the site,” said Vivek Goyal, who manages the IT Cell of the Delhi BJP.

The website would have features like photo galleries and video bars said Goyal. Asked whether the website would have any interactive or unique features for users,Goyal’s reply was negative. He said the format of the site would be ‘basic.’

“Interactive features like blogs are already there on Advaniji’s website. On this site, the main thrust would be on information,” Goyal added.

Delhi BJP President O P Kohli, who strongly believes in traditional ways of campaigning, still hopes that the website would contribute to the elections.

“I’m not really conversant with technology. Tools like the Internet, however, are helpful and do contribute towards campaigning as this is the age of instant communication. I believe traditional and modern ways of campaigning compliment one another,” he said.

Interestingly, many Delhi BJP leaders already have their personal portals on the Internet. Among them are V K Malhotra,Vijay Goel,Jagdish Mukhi,Harsh Vardhan and Vijender Gupta.

“This is a welcome step by the Delhi BJP. The Internet really increases connectivity with the people and appeals to the youth as they are more tech savvy. Through the portals, voters can easily access details and other information about the candidates and parties,” said Vijender Gupta, who launched his personal website just a few days ago.

Gupta, however, would prefer to place his money on more conventional ways of campaigning.

“I believe that the crux of the campaign is direct interaction with voters by door-to-door campaigning and public meetings. Websites are more of a supportive measure for the campaign and make it stronger,” he added.
