Following a brief exchange of fire, the Ghaziabad police late on Sunday arrested a man who allegedly shot dead a person outside Muradnagar police station last week, officers said. The man sustained a leg injury in the exchange of fire, the police added.

The accused has been identified as Ajay Chaudhary, 27, alias Mini alias Chotu, a resident of Milak Ravli village in Muradnagar. The police have seized his pistol.

Lipi Nagaich, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Masuri, said that on the intervening night of Sunday and Monday, Muradnagar police and a Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team were carrying out routine checking at Salemabad Jhal near NH-24 when a motorcycle rider was seen coming from Ravli Road.

“When the police team tried to stop him, he sped towards Hussainpur Road where his motorcycle slipped and he fell. When he saw that he was surrounded by the police team, he fired at us. We fired at him in self-defence, during which Ajay was shot in his leg and fell down,” said the ACP.

“We have recovered one illegal pistol and a motorcycle from his possession,” the officer said.

The arrest comes nearly three days after the Ghaziabad police arrested Monty Chaudhary, 28, the main accused in the case pertaining to the murder of Ravi Sharma, 27, outside Muradnagar police station, where he had gone along with family members to file a complaint.

According to the police, at around 7.30 pm on Wednesday, Monty and Ajay were in a car when they got into a verbal spat with Ravi’s father, Ravindra Sharma, over the passage of cars via Ravli Road.

Sharma and his family members reached Muradnagar police station at around 11.30 pm to file a complaint when Monty and Ajay arrived on a bike, shot at Ravi Sharma and fled. Sharma was declared dead at a nearby hospital,” a police officer said.

“We are collecting all information about their criminal history and all necessary legal action is underway,” said the ACP.
