The Public Works Department (PWD) is planning to hand over the Munak Canal elevated road project to the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI), under which a 20-km-long corridor will be built from connect Inderlok to Bawana in Northwest Delhi, PWD Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh said on Wednesday.

“We plan to hand over the project to NHAI. The flyover will be crucial in reducing congestion in Outer Delhi, as per PWD estimates, the cost of the project is around Rs 4,700 crore,” Singh said.

He added that the Detailed Project Report (DPR) of the project is almost ready. Once it is ready, tenders will be floated to begin the preliminary and civil work on the ground, he added.

Officials said while the Delhi government will fund the project, the NHAI is set to execute it. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta had held a meeting in this regard earlier this week. “In the meeting, the proposal to hand over the project to NHAI was approved, as the project requires land acquisition on the Haryana-Delhi border,” said an official.

The Munak Canal, a key water supply channel running through both Haryana and Delhi, was originally built to reduce water loss in the Western Yamuna Canal and ensure efficient water transport to the capital. Now, it is being eyed as the base for a crucial elevated corridor aimed at decongesting roads. The elevated road will also connect to Urban Extension Road-II, further strengthening Delhi’s Outer Ring Road network.
