MPs enter race for Delhi BJP chief

Rajya Sabha MP and former Delhi chief Vijay Goel too is in the race: Sources

With Delhi BJP chief and chief ministerial candidate Harsh Vardhan now becoming the Union Health Minister, the race for the party’s top job in Delhi has begun.

The Delhi unit of the BJP now eagerly awaits the selection of a new national party president — Rajnath Singh has been inducted into the Cabinet as Home minister — and believe the capital will get a new chief soon after.

Sources in the party said this time, even MPs from Delhi are in the race for the top job. Contenders for the post have already started lobbying and are doing the rounds of senior national leaders’ residences and party offices.

Sources said many Delhi MPs were hoping to make it to the Modi Cabinet as MoS. But with none  except Delhi BJP chief Dr Harsh Vardhan finding a place in the Cabinet, it is learnt that the MPs are now vying for the post of Delhi unit chief.

With fresh Assembly elections almost a certainty, many in the party believe that they would be able to play a bigger role in the capital. As one of them put it,

“What if I am an MP? I have every right to contest for the post and lobby for it.”

The names of MPs that are doing rounds are Meenakshi Lekhi, Ramesh Bidhuri, Parvesh Sahib Singh and Udit Raj.

Many believe that Rajya Sabha MP from Rajasthan and former Delhi unit chief Vijay Goel too is keen on the post.

Senior leaders believe that there is not a single leader with stature who could lead the party against the AAP in the Delhi Assembly elections. Hence, there are talks of bringing Harsh Vardhan back as chief minister candidate for Assembly polls. However, some of the MPs believe that they have proved themselves by winning the Lok sabha polls, and, hence, have the experience to be the unit chief.
