A 27-year-old mother of two died on Sunday after consuming poison at her home in Timarpur,North Delhi, police said.
A magisterial inquiry into Payal Sharma’s death has been ordered to ascertain if dowry was involved.
“Payal married to Ajay Sharma four years ago and was living in a joint family with her in-laws. Ajay runs a printing press. On Saturday night,Payal reportedly consumed a chemical used in the printing press and fell unconscious. She was taken to Bara Hindu Rao Hospital, but couldn’t be saved,” a police officer said.
“The incident was reported around 1 am on Sunday. Her in-laws made the PCR call. They said Payal was depressed,” the officer said.
“We are questioning the in-laws,the neighbours and the family of the woman to know if she was emotionally or physically tortured for dowry. Her family has not blamed her in-laws for the death,” he said.
Other than her 32-year-old husband,Payal is survived by a three-year-old son,a nine-month-old daughter. “A case will be registered based on the inquiry report,” an officer said.
