A Key power supply line in Central Delhi tripped on Saturday afternoon when a monkey got entangled in the grid, triggering power cuts in several South Delhi colonies.
Officials of the Delhi Transco, managing the transmission line at the IP power station, said they were forced to cut supply to the transformer when the monkey entered the yard.
We tried to chase it away but it got electrocuted and that caused a short-circuit in the transmission lines. We sought the help of paramilitary personnel posted there to remove the monkey, said VP Dutta, director (Operations) of the Delhi Transco.
One grid line was damaged and the maintenance work took nearly one-and-a-half hours, said a Transco spokesperson.
We asked the power supplier (BSES Rajdhani) to route power through alternative lines. As far as we understand, power shortages in any given area should not have been for more than 10 to 15 minutes while the load was being shifted, the spokesperson said.
However, many parts of South Delhi like New Friends Colony,Maharani Bagh,South Extension and Ashram reported power cuts for more than two hours, said power officials.
The combined load from the affected line is close to 200 megawatts and it is impossible to re-route that kind of power effectively. Our engineers did what they could. Further, they would have had to re-route the power through other Transco lines, all of which were overloaded, a discom official said.
