The body of a four-year-old girl was found at the Batla House dhobi ghat area in Jamia Nagar on Sunday. Police said the girl had been missing since morning. A case of kidnapping was lodged but no arrest has been made. After preliminary investigation, police said there appeared to be no external injuries on the body. But local residents alleged it had injury marks made by a sharp object.
Police said they got a call around 4 am about the missing girl. She lived in the dhobi ghat area. Relatives alleged a local resident first tried to kidnap another seven-year-old girl around 1.30 am. But when her father woke up, he fled, they alleged. Two hours later, they alleged it was the same man who kidnapped and murdered the four-year-old. Police are investigating the allegations.
“I woke up around 3.30 am and found my daughter missing. I raised alarm. My mother, mother-in-law and sisters-in-law woke up. I alerted my husband and his brothers as well. All of us searched for her but failed to trace her. Then, we called police. My daughter’s body was found around 12 pm submerged in water. Her stomach had a deep gash,” her mother said.
Police said families in the dhobi ghat area live under tarpaulin sheets or in one-room houses without doors. “The houses here have no doors and all of us were fast asleep. This man came and tried to kidnap my daughter. Luckily, my husband woke up and the man fled. Then, I suspect he went and attacked my neighbour’s child,” the mother of the seven-year-old said.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southeast) M S Randhawa said, “A case of kidnapping has been registered and the body has been sent for a postmortem examination only after which will we be able to ascertain the cause of death. Prima facie, there are no external injury marks on her body, which was retrieved by police around 12 pm. The culprit is absconding and investigations are on.”
