Due to high levels of pollution found in air,soil and water in several parts of Delhi — notably the Najafgarh basin — the Ministry of Environment and Forests has called for a moratorium on new projects till action plans for these areas are ready.
The Najafgarh drain basin — Anand Parbat,Naraina,Okhla,and Wazirpu — ranks eleventh among the 88 most polluted industrial clusters in India as per a new environment index study by the Central Pollution Control Board.
The temporary ban on new projects in the area — especially projects like hospitals — will extend till August this year.
Newsline had first reported how environmental clearance was not given to two hospitals in Dwarka and Burari,with the project developers being asked to submit ambient air quality data first.
Central Pollution Control Board chairman S P Gautam said,“There will be a ban on new projects in the 42 most polluted industrial clusters in the country. Action plans for these areas need to be made.”
The ban will also apply to Noida (number 12 on the list),Ghaziabad (number 3) and Faridabad (number 18).
