While delivering the Rohini Ghadiok Memorial Lecture at India Habitat Centre,Dr Binayak Sen on Friday said there is a need for greater level of participation from the middle class in dealing with issues such as famine. The problem has registered itself but there is a deficit of participation from the middle class. They are reluctant to participate in eradication of such issues till their own interests are not affected. When a rape happens,we think its wrong because our daughters are out on the streets, Sen said.
Rohini,a social activist fighting for empowerment of women and marginalised communities, died two years ago. Sen said the Planning Commission had unceremoniously put aside the recommendations of its group regarding universal health care. He said hunger was not caused by shortage of grain. There is so much grain in the country that the government doesnt know where to store it, he said.
