After months of apprehension, residents in Golf Links area can feel relieved. The first Delhi Metro tunnel-boring machine (TBM) operating under their homes has finally made a “breakthrough”,as Metro officials put it,at the Khan Market station.

According to Delhi Metro officials, this is significant since a major stretch of the underground line ran under the high-profile residential colony of Golf Links.

The stretch is part of the Central Secretariat-Badarpur line of Metro’s Phase-II. It has four underground stations, parts of which come in Lutyens’ Delhi — in the Capital’s heart with British-era bungalows and VIP addresses. Tunneling work for the Metro has meant non-stop construction activity under several residential plots for months now.

The tunnel-boring machine was working on the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium to Khan Market stretch; it emerged on the Khan Market end on Thursday. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation is now left only finishing touches to tunnels under residential properties.

Officials said the boring machine on down-line will take another month to complete its operation.

The tunnel-boring machine had earlier made its way through to the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in January and February this year. This is part of the line from Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium to Jangpura line, with four underground stations at Central Secretariat,Jangpura,Jawaharlal Stadium and Khan Market. Three of these are new stations and needed tunneling.

Before the tunneling operation began,Delhi Metro had conducted a community interaction programme with residents of the Golf Links area to explain the procedure and seek their cooperation,DMRC spokesperson Anuj Dayal told Newsline. “We keep a constant check on buildings and properties directly above a tunnel while work is going underneath,” he said. “In this case,we had to take extra precaution as there were residential plots above the tunnels and several equipment — like tilt meters and crack meters — had to be installed in residential plots.”

Dayal said Metro had to keep in mind “apprehensions of residents regarding noise levels during construction activity, cleanliness and preservation of greens in the locality. But the residents were very cooperative throughout the process and helped us conduct checks inside their houses at regular intervals”.
