During questioning, police said the men admitted that they were relatives and belonged to the Sapera community.
Four men who allegedly posed as sadhus (priests) and tricked a Chartered Accountant into giving up his gold ring near the Indira Gandhi International Airport have been arrested, said Delhi Police on Wednesday.
They said the victim, 32-year-old Gagan Jain, was in Delhi for a conference when he was approached by the fraudsters near JW Marriot Hotel in Aerocity.
“The accused introduced themselves as high priests from the Haridwar Akhara, claiming to be well-versed in Vedic knowledge. They convinced Gagan that his gold ring was defective and needed to be handed over for good fortune,” Additional Commissioner of Police (IGI) Usha Rangnani said.
The complainant alleged that the men offered him to apply a tilak on his forehead. He refused, but they insisted, telling him that if he believed in Ganga Maiya, he should accept it, Rangnani said.
“Fearing the sadhus’ threats, Gagan then handed over his ring. The fraudsters instructed him not to look back or else he would suffer misfortune. Later, realising he had been deceived, Gagan reported the incident to the police,” she said.
Another officer said a dedicated police team, led by Inspector Sushil Goyal, reviewed CCTV footage and traced the suspects to Mahipalpur.
“The arrested individuals — Rinku Nath (30), Sahil Nath (22), Rocky Nath (35), and Vickey Nath (31) — admitted to the crime. They claimed they had been impersonating sadhus to deceive people,” the officer said.
The stolen ring was recovered. The investigation to determine if the group has been involved in other crimes continues, he said.
During questioning, police said the men admitted that they were relatives and belonged to the Sapera community.
They hatched their plan after observing how devotees in Hairdwar, eager to receive blessings, willingly offered money and other articles to saints, believing it would bring them good fortune, police said in a statement.
They decided to exploit the situation by dressing as priests and deceiving the public into giving them money and other articles, it added.
