Cops probe possible role of larger syndicate
A 55-year-old man who visited Max Super Speciality Hospital in Saket as a medical representative was arrested on August 29 for allegedly stealing equipment worth Rs 4 lakh, police said on Saturday. With the arrest of Yogesh Kumar, the accused, officials added, a probe is underway to find if a larger syndicate is involved in similar theft cases at the Capital’s top hospitals.
The theft at Max Super Speciality Hospital was reported on August 19. A team was subsequently constituted at the Saket Police Station, which collected the details of the suspect and analysed the CCTV footage. “The photograph of the accused was circulated among security guards and staff of the hospital was also directed to keep a close watch on all the medical representatives visiting the hospital,” said an official.
On August 24, the police team was analysing the CCTV footage of the hospital premises and the suspect was spotted near a block of the OPD. A trap was laid and Yogesh, a resident of Sahibabad in Ghaziabad, was held, said police. Two pieces of medical equipment, one indirect ophthalmoscope and one scan pachymeter were recovered from him, officials added.
Said DCP (South) Ankit Chauhan, “During the questioning, he disclosed that he worked with a company at Narayana Vihar that deals in supplying medical equipment to hospitals. On August 13, he entered the hospital by showing his identity card as a representative of the said company.”
He then allegedly reached the Opthalmology department and at around 2:30 pm, when he found that nobody was there, he stole one indirect ophthalmoscope and fled from the spot. “Recently, he had also stolen one scan pachymeter from Yashoda Hospital in Kaushambi in UP. He further disclosed that he used to sell these stolen medical equipment via online websites at cheaper rates.”
Said a senior officer, “We are investigating the involvement of other people in this theft syndicate where expensive medical equipment has been stolen from top city hospitals. Other previous cases of theft of equipment from hospitals are being cross-checked with the antecedents of Yogesh.”
