‘MCD under Delhi govt will be a weak organisation’

Senior leaders of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi on Tuesday submitted a memorandum to Union Home Minister P Chidambaram, opposing the Ministry’s proposal to bring the civic body under the Delhi government’s control.

Senior leaders of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi on Tuesday submitted a memorandum to Union Home Minister P Chidambaram, opposing the Ministry’s proposal to bring the civic body under the Delhi government’s control.

The leaders have alleged that the proposal seems to be “politically motivated and ad-hoc in approach”. They said the proposal is an effort to “divert public attention from the multiple failures of the state government, and is totally based on political consideration”.

The leaders, accompanied by other members of the Corporation, also led a protest march from Town Hall to North Block to oppose the proposal.

Around 167 members of the Corporation, all dressed in black to mark protest, participated in the protest march. The protest march came as a reaction to the recent MHA proposal, whereby,on September 9,it was suggested that the MCD be brought under the control of the Delhi Government.

“The proposal is meant to weaken the Corporation and it must be immediately dropped. Instead, the Central Government must restore civic services which have been snatched from the MCD over a period of time, like the Delhi Transport Corporation, the Delhi Fire Service and the Delhi Jal Board,” said Subhash Arya, leader of MCD house.

“We hope the Home Minister will ensure that the MCD becomes administratively and financially stronger,” he said.

Arya said that all members of the MCD feel that important issues concerning the governance of the Capital should not be politically motivated.

“The state government has failed on all fronts and is now trying to cover-up through such measures. The performance of the MCD and the Delhi government are being compared by the public,” he said.

Arya was also miffed by the Delhi Government’s recent move of launching a helpline to register complaints against civic problems.

“Delhi government should resolve problems affecting their work before launching another helpline to sort out civic problems. Launching of this helpline by Delhi government is a political move and the advertisements are a waste of public money,” Arya said.
