Almost four years after it was conceived, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has finally tabled its ambitious redevelopment plan of the road from Red Fort to Fatehpuri Masjid in Old Delhi before the Delhi Urban Arts Commission (DUAC).

Almost four years after it was conceived, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has finally tabled its ambitious redevelopment plan of the road from Red Fort to Fatehpuri Masjid in Old Delhi before the Delhi Urban Arts Commission (DUAC).

The Rs 15-crore project, submitted on September 2,aims at giving the stretch an attractive look.

Although the DUAC is yet to consider the plan,MCD city zone deputy commissioner Vijay Singh said that once granted approval, all components of the plan will be implemented within six months.

The project includes provisions for modern street furniture, streetlighting, modern signages, attractive elevations, convenient footpaths, benches and a common cable system.

Once the plan gets the nod,the MCD will also start work on introducing the light rail system and a new tram service on the stretch between Red Fort and Fatehpuri Masjid.

According to the plan details, four metre-gauge trams, each having a capacity to carry 20 people, will run on the southern carriageway of Chandni Chowk from Red Fort to Fatehpuri Masjid. There will be two tracks on the southern carriageway — while one tram will go from Red Fort to Fatehpuri Masjid, the other will make the journey back to Red Fort.

Once the trams are introduced, the northern carriageway of the Chandni Chowk stretch will be used for vehicular traffic, but traffic will not be allowed to enter from the Red Fort side to ease congestion. All vehicular traffic will instead enter through H C Sen Marg,Town Hall area,or from the Fatehpuri Masjid side.

Once the plan is fully implemented, the stretch between Red Fort and Fatehpuri Masjid will have a 3.5-metre wide motorway on both sides, besides an eight to 15-metre wide pedestrian footpath.

The stretch will also have a 1.2-metre wide street furniture strip. Landscaping will be done and trees will be grown in clusters of three all along the stretch. The plan also makes way for micro-tunnelling of underground ducts for service cables, hence clearing all overhanging wires.

The redevelopment plan of the Red Fort to Fatehpuri Masjid road is a part of MCD’s grand Shahjahanabad Redevelopment Plan. The latter includes redevelopment of most of the Walled City and the Chandni Chowk redevelopment plan is part of it.

The Shahjahanabad plan also includes the redevelopment of Jama Masjid precincts, which got the DUAC’s approval this June.
