Jai Kishan Sharma,Leader of the Opposition in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, has accused Vijender Gupta, the outgoing chairman of the MCD Standing Committee,of a uniform scam.
The Corporation spent Rs 20 crore on uniforms for children and staff at its schools last year, and an order for these uniforms was placed with the National Textile Corporation and the Khadi Gram Udyog. The orders were placed without calling any tenders. Gupta awarded the tender on his own, making money for himself in the process, Sharma said during a Standing Committee meeting on Monday.
The National Textile Corporation is a sick unit of the Government of India and does not have the resources to manufacture cloth. The former chairman of the Standing Committee placed the order to a company that was itself outsourcing its orders, Sharma said.
Cloth that cost Rs 54 per metre was bought by the MCD at Rs 79 per metre. The Corporation bought 26 lakh metres of cloth, spending an additional Rs 6.5 lakh in the process,Sharma said.
