The cricket World Cup fever refuses to die and the rewards for the Men in Blue keep rolling,sometimes from unexpected quarters.
After the Centre and the state doled out hefty rewards for members of Team India,Delhi’s largest municipal body has stepped in to show appreciation.
Mayor Prithvi Raj Sawhney on Tuesday announced that the Delhi cricketers — Virender Sehwag,Virat Kohli,Gautam Gambhir and Ashish Nehra — will not have to pay property tax to the MCD for lifetime.
The reward has also been extended to UP-based cricketer Piyush Chawla,who has a house in Delhi.
According to the civic agency,under Section 177 of the Delhi Municipal Act,it can allow certain properties to not pay tax.
“They managed to beat Sri Lanka and win the cup for the country,which is a matter of great pride. As a token of appreciation we have decided that house tax of all the four Delhi players will be waived off for lifetime. A proposal in this regard will be brought in the Standing Committee of the MCD soon,” said the Mayor.
Property owners in the city living in MCD areas are supposed to pay property tax to the MCD every year.
“It will take at least 10 days to draft the proposal and it will be implemented from this year,” said Yogender Chandolia,chairman of the Standing Committee.
There are more than 30 lakh properties in the city. The civic agency has been collecting tax from only nine lakh residents.
