“We are also checking if any old pipeline is malfunctioning,” the official added.
Several residents of Pocket B 7 in Mayur Vihar Phase III have been complaining of foul-smelling water being supplied to their homes for around a month now, with many alleging they are facing health issues.
According to Delhi Jal Board (DJB) officials, the issue seems to be the result of sewer water entering pipelines in the area. They have, however, not been able to trace the point of contamination due to existing encroachments in the area, officials said.
Residents of the 80-100 affected houses said the problem had started in mid-March. “The water coming from the pipes is black most of the time. Even when clear water comes, it has a foul smell,” said Vijay Shanker Menon, a resident.
Another resident, Sashi Sharma, added, “The water has led to an allergy in my hand… I have no other choice but to use this dirty water to wash clothes… How long can we rely on water from somebody else’s home?”
A DJB official blamed the issue on existing encroachments in the area. “Many residents,
including shopkeepers, as well as buildings, have encroached on the area, covering the sewer line. We will write to the district magistrate to remove the encroachment.”
“We are also checking if any old pipeline is malfunctioning,” the official added.
