Mandi House to Jama Masjid: Metro sets 42-month target

Final round of soil testing starts for 3.3-km section which will be underground.

Construction of the upcoming Metro corridor from Mandi House to Jama Masjid, that will run along the Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg,is set to begin with the contractor commencing the final round of soil testing. Pockets of land have been dug out along the corridor to test the nature of the soil, check the depth of the water table and presence of rocks.

The contract for construction of stations and tunnels between Mandi House and Jama Masjid was awarded to Larsen & Toubro (L&T) —SUCG (Shanghai Urban Construction Group). The 3.3 kilometre section will be completely underground, covering three stations — ITO,Delhi Gate and Jama Masjid. It is targeted for completion in 42 months.

“It takes around a month after the contract is awarded to begin groundwork at the site. All the manpower and machinery required will be put in place. Soil testing is being done at several spots along the corridor, where a hole of around two inch diameter is dug as deep as the station or tunnel is proposed to be,” a Delhi Metro spokesperson said.

“This helps determine the final design of the tunnel and stations,as,during construction, one has to take into account the rocks that will come in the way of tunneling, and the depth of the water table.”

Full-fledged construction work on the corridor is slated to begin by mid-March,by the time the Delhi Metro and Traffic Police finalise the traffic diversion plan for the areas around ITO.

The line, however,is yet to get an approval from the National Monument Authority as it runs along the restricted area of several protected monuments such as Red Fort,Delhi Gate,Khooni

Darwaza. Metro officials said a go-ahead is expected soon from the heritage body, and work will begin only after the clearance is given.

The Badarpur corridor, which runs up to Central Secretariat, will extend to Mandi House. It will run along ITO,Delhi Gate,Jama Masjid,Red Fort before terminating at Kashmere Gate.

According to internal completion targets, the first section of Phase III from Central Secretariat to Mandi House line is expected to be opened for public by December 2014. The rest of the corridor, from Mandi House to Kashmere Gate,is targeted for opening by mid-2015.
