The Crime Branch of the Delhi Police arrested a man allegedly involved in more than 20 cases of murder, robberies and dacoities in Uttar Pradesh’s Muzaffarnagar area.

According to police, the accused,Shadab Qureshi, pawned the jewellery he looted from various places with Muthoot Finance Corporation and used the cash for other illegal activities.

In one instance,he borrowed Rs 79,000 from the Muthoot branch in Pitampura in the name of Shahid. In the second instance,he posed as Javed and borrowed Rs 23,000 from the Shastri Nagar branch, police said.

Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime) Ravindra Yadav said the Crime Branch received inputs from the Anti-Extortion Cell that Shadab was hiding in East Delhi. A trap to arrest him was laid,he said.

“Shadab was asked to surrender near Ashok Vihar. He refused and instead whipped out a pistol and fired at the police team. A head constable from the team also fired two rounds and overpowered Shadab. His car,a Skoda, was also seized,” Yadav said.

Born to a lower middle class family,Shadab used to run a meat shop in Meerut. During this time,he came in contact with a local criminal. Wanting to lead a lavish lifestyle,he began committing thefts and robberies.

In 2006,he was arrested for robbery. However, after being released from jail,he decided to reopen the meat shop and stay away from crime. But this time, his business failed and he had to borrow Rs 50,000 by mortgaging his ancestral home, police said.

Because of the high interest rates,he could not repay the loan and lost his house to Hazi Shamshad, the moneylender, police said.

During this time,he fell in love with the moneylender’s sister, police said. But Shamshad did not approve of their relationship because of Shadab’s poor financial status. “To earn money quickly,he joined a gang and started committing robberies and dacoities in 2009. He was again arrested,” the officer said.

Police said while Shadab was in jail,Shamshad’s sister was married off. This enraged him and soon after his release,he killed the woman’s cousin,Aas Mohammad,as he was opposed to the affair.

The officer said,“Before his arrest,Shadab was looking for an opportunity to kill Shamshad and his nephew, who had taken over his ancestral home and had married off the woman he loved.”
