A 25-year-old man was arrested on Sunday for allegedly stealing a car from Prashant Vihar in Outer Delhi and kidnapping the vehicle-owners mother and two daughters, police said.
He was caught at a picket while he was on the way to Nithari. The stolen Santro,a motorcycle and a country-made weapon were recovered from him.
Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer) M A Rizvi said: Gulshan stole Sunil Kumars car when he had gone to Bhagwati Hospital with his wife Pooja, mother Shakuntala and his two daughters aged seven and two.
Kumar had gone to purchase medicines from a chemist outside the hospital, leaving Pooja,Shakuntala and the two minors in the car. In the meantime,Gulshan opened the door and sat in the drivers seat. He was holding a gun. Pooja managed to get off before the man drove away the car, the officer said.
Gulshan dropped Shakuntala and Kumars younger daughter a few kilometres away at Sai Baba Chowk in Rohini.
After some time,he called Kumar and demanded Rs 20 lakh as ransom for his elder daughter.
By then,Kumar had alerted police and the call was traced to Rithala Metro station.
Gulshan had borrowed the phone of a passerby, saying the girl had lost her way and he wanted to alert her parents. But he soon realised that police were behind him. He dropped the girl at Rithala Metro station and fled, Rizvi said.
Police later spotted the car in Aman Vihar, where a constable reportedly tried to stop it. Gulshan tried to run over the policeman, forcing his colleagues to fire at the tyres. Moments after that,Gulshan abandoned the car, which had two flat tyres, some distance away.
He was caught while trying to flee to Nithari.
Gulshan needed money. He went to Ekta Enclave near Peeragarhi and stole a motorcycle. Then he came to Rohini looking for soft targets and he spotted the women in the car with two young girls, Rizvi said.
Police found the black Karizma motorcycle near Bhagwati Hospital.
