Angry with his ex-wife for getting married again,a 31-year-old man allegedly barged into her house attacked her family, shooting dead her father and stabbing four others with a cleaver.

The man,Vikram, was armed with two country-made pistols, two cleavers, two litres of petrol and fake bombs when he went to his ex-wife Suman’s house. He allegedly threatened to set her house on fire. While Suman’s father Om Prakash (58) was shot dead,Vikram allegedly stabbed Suman and three other members of her family, police said.

According to police,Suman had divorced Vikram two years ago because of harassment over dowry. He even assaulted her often. Later she married one Sonu,a resident of Palwal. This reportedly angered Vikram.

According to Suman’s brother Madan,Vikram was accompanied by his elder brother and two friends when he went to Suman’s house at 1 am on Tuesday and attacked Om Prakash (58),who was sleeping in the verandah outside the house in Jaitpur,Southeast Delhi.

Speaking to Newsline,Madan said his father was sleeping outside to guard the construction material they had bought to build a new house. He said Vikram stood outside the house and called out to Suman. When his father asked Vikram to leave,he fired at him.

“Hearing the noise, all the family members rushed out. We saw that my father had been shot in the chest. Vikram charged towards us with a pistol and tried to fire. But the pistol stopped working. So he pulled out another pistol and shot my brother Jai Prakash in the abdomen,” Madan said.

Madan said Vikram was wearing a jacket which had multiple pockets and three to four bombs attached to it. He carried a petrol can and threatened to set the house on fire.

“He was shouting at the top of his voice and swinging the pistol and the knife at us. When we shouted for help,he said he would not leave until he had ensured that each one of us was dead,” he said.

Madan said when he tried to overpower him,Vikram pulled out a cleaver and attacked. The moment he saw Suman,he attacked her too. Suman sustained four stab wounds — two on her face, one on her hand and one on her chest.

Madan said Vikram also stabbed his mother Bati Devi and his wife Suneeta. “Because of the commotion, neighbours came to check on us. Vikram’s brother and friends fled the spot, but he refused to leave. The neighbours then hit him with a brick. A PCR call was made,” Madan said.

While Suman,Jai Prakash and Bati Devi are said to be critical,Madan and Suneeta are out of danger. Vikram too was taken to hospital.

Police said formal arrests would will be made once Vikram was fit for questioning. His brother and two friends are on the run.

A senior police officer said,“The bomb disposal squad inspected the place after the incident and did not find any explosive. We have recorded the statements of Suman’s relatives and have registered an FIR.”

Police said Suman had gone to her father’s house to celebrate Dussehra and Diwali. When Vikram found that she was there,he hatched a plan to kill her and and her family.
