A 34-year-old set himself ablaze outside the Gurgaon Assistant Commissioner of Police’s office on Tuesday. With 70 per cent burns, the man was rushed to the civil hospital from where he was referred to Safdarjung Hospital.
This incident took place at the Khandsa road office of the ACP of Gurgaon. According to eyewitnesses, Navdeep Mehta, a resident of Jacobpura, Gurgaon, had come to the women’s cell at the ACP’s office after his wife and her family filed a case accusing him of demanding dowry and harassment.
“He got into an argument with his wife and mother-in-law outside the office. Within a few minutes, we heard him shouting that he would burn himself,” Manoj Yadav, an eyewitness, said.
Policeman present on the premises did not take him seriously and, hence, did not intervene, Yadav said.
When no one paid attention, he got petrol from his motorcycle parked outside and sprinkled it on his body and set himself ablaze, another eyewitness said.
Police said he then entered the women’s cell and tried to embrace his mother-in-law in order to set her ablaze as well. The woman too suffered minor burns on her body.
