The Delhi Commission for Women wrote to Delhi Police on Wednesday demanding an FIR be registered against a man who allegedly revealed online the identity of a minor complainant in the sexual harassment case against Wrestling Federation of India chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.

Commission officials alleged that the minor complainant, who along with six other wrestlers lodged a case against Bhushan, a BJP MP, was under threat as an unknown person had posted a social media video revealing her identity.

In the video, a man who claims to be the minor’s girl’s uncle says she is over 20 years old and shows documents seeking to support his claim.

Reacting to the video, commission chief Swati Maliwal tweeted in Hindi, “A man posing as the uncle of a minor girl who had filed a complaint against Brij Bhushan, is revealing the identity of the girl by showing her papers in the press. I am giving notice to the police, there should be an FIR against this man in POCSO. Is it because Brij Bhushan is free…so that there can be pressure on the victim?”

Commission officials said that revealing the identity of the survivor is an offence under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act. “The accused in the matter is highly influential and has not been arrested till date. The Hon’ble Supreme Court, considering the sensitivity of the case, and direct threat to the survivors, especially the minor one, had directed the police to provide them security…In such a scenario, the act of revealing the minor survivor’s identity has to be dealt with seriously” reads the letter sent by the commission to police.

The commission has also demanded Singh’s arrest and an inquiry into whether Singh had anything to do with the revelation of the complainant’s identity.
