A 35-year-old dance instructor allegedly killed his eight-year-old son and attempted to kill his wife and nine-year-old daughter before attempting suicide in the Farsh Bazaar area of East Delhi on Monday night. Police said the family was under financial stress and that a property dispute triggered the incident.
According to police, the accused has been identified as Ajay Kumar, who is a dance instructor and teaches yoga and aerobics at his residence in Farsh Bazaar. However, police said, for the past five years, he had been unemployed.
Police said Ajay and his wife Ritu (30) mixed sleeping pills in milk and gave it to their two children — Vedika and Krishna — around 11 pm on Monday. The family resides in Bholanath Nagar in Shahdara.
Around midnight, after his family had fallen asleep, Ajay first slit the throats of his son, daughter and wife. Later, he attempted suicide by slitting his wrists and neck. Police said Ajay had programmed his phone to send SMSes to his sister Dipti and brother-in-law Satbir at 4 am, informing them about the incident.
When Satbir received the SMS at 4 am, he and Dipti rushed to Ajay’s house in Shahdara, where they broke open the door to enter since it was locked from the inside. In their statement to police, Dipti and Satbir found the bleeding family members.
A PCR call was made at 4.23 am and the victims rushed to Hedgewar Hospital, where Krishna was declared dead on arrival. Vedika, Ajay and Ritu were taken to Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital, where Vedika is said to be critical while Ajay and Ritu are said to be stable. Their statements are yet to be recorded.
Police have recovered a suicide note written in a diary signed by all four family members, which has led the police to ascertain that the incident was a suicide pact. The note read: “Hum apne ghar walon aur kuch bahar walon ke wajah se suicide karne wale hain.Hum bahaut pareshan the. Lekin humne sabhi ko maaf kar diya hai aur hum kisiko zimmedar nahi theherate. Kisiko unhe pareshan karne ki zaroorat nahi hai.” (We are upset with family members and some other people. We are going to commit suicide. We were very unhappy. But we have forgiven everyone. No one should be troubled.)
Police said Ajay initially lived with his mother Rajkumari at her residence in Farsh Bazaar. However, owing to a property dispute, he shifted to Shahdara. His sister Dipti and her husband Satbir too live separately in Farsh Bazaar.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) Ajay Kumar said, “A case under sections of murder (302), attempt to murder (307), attempt to suicide (309) and poisoning (328) has been registered.”
