A 26-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting a 12-year-old girl in Outer District’s Alipur area. According to police, the incident occurred on Saturday around 10 am in Jhingola village of Alipur.
Police said that the accused, Karnail Singh, sexually assaulted the girl after he found her alone at home. He belongs to the same village.
“The girl raised an alarm and villagers rushed to her rescue. Singh was later caught by villagers,” a police officer said.
“We have recorded the girl’s statement and have registered a case a against the accused,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer) Vikramjit Singh said.
The villagers had allegedly beaten up the accused and painted his face black before tying him to a tree.
When asked if the accused had been beaten, the DCP said, “After the incident, the accused was taken to the hospital for a medical examination. But there were no grave wounds on his body.” Police said the accused has no prior criminal record.
A case has been registered at Alipur police station under sections 376 (punishment for rape), 354 B (assault or use of criminal force to woman with intent to disrobe ), 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation) of the IPC and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act.
