Posing as a CBI officer, a 19-year-old labourer, who was arrested on Monday, extorted over Rs 4 lakh from a Dwarka-based man after blackmailing him over a nude video call, police said on Tuesday.
The police identified the accused as Amit Kumar.
On August 8, 2024, the victim allegedly received a WhatsApp video call from a woman, during which she started removing her clothes, followed by him doing the same. “After five or six seconds, the complainant said, the call was cut abruptly,” Ankit Singh, DCP (Dwarka), said.
The next day, the complainant received a call from a man claiming to be a CBI special officer.
“The man said that the woman, who had last spoken to the complainant over phone, had died by suicide. He also sent the recording of the video call, in which the complainant was nude, along with pictures of an ambulance,” Singh said.
According to the police, the complainant was told that the woman’s family would not file a police complaint if he paid Rs 4,84,500. Following this, the complainant transferred the amount into two accounts, they added.
A team tracked down Kumar to Chamba in Himachal Pradesh by following the money trail and using his call detail records.
