A man was found in an unconscious state in the Khajoori Khas area of Northeast Delhi on Saturday night. The police said Arif Khan had been badly beaten up. He was taken to Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
On Sunday, residents of the area took to the streets protesting against what they alleged was a hush-up by the police in the case. They said they had named almost a dozen people in connection with the murder and were demanding their arrest.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Northeast) Surender Singh Yadav,on the other hand, said,We cant arrest a dozen people unless we have proof of their involvement.
The police said they suspect a financial dispute could be the reason behind the murder but are probing the matter from all possible angles.
Two persons, meanwhile, have been arrested in connection with the incident and are being interrogated. They have been identified as Gagan and Rajesh. A search is on for two more suspects,Rohtash and Pintu, reportedly absconding since the incident. The police said Pintu has a criminal background and has been involved in various cases of assault in the area.
Initial investigations suggest an argument broke out between the accused and Arif. They were drinking together and reportedly argued with each other when the situation flared up into a fist fight. The accused beat Arif up so badly that he fell unconscious and later died, a police officer said.
DCP (Northeast) Surender Singh Yadav said,We have arrested Gagan and Rajesh and are looking for the other accused. They are being interrogated and we are probing the matter from all possible angles. Yadav said they suspect a woman is also involved in the case and the police are looking for her. He,however, dismissed a love affair as the reason for the murder.
The police said the accused and the victim have a history of rivalry between them. Arif Khan owned a restaurant in the Bhajanpura area. A case of murder has been registered at the Khajuri Khas police station.
