A man accused of murdering his 18-month-old daughter and attempting to murder his wife was arrested from Bijwasan railway station in Southwest Delhi on Thursday.
The accused, identified as Ramesh,a resident of Gulrahiya village in Uttar Pradesh, brought his wife and baby daughter to Delhi and allegedly attacked them as he suspected that his wife had an affair with his cousin. Police said his wife survived, while the toddler was killed after his assault on June 14.
The incident came to light when police found the woman and the child’s body at a hospital. The baby was declared dead on arrival, while the wife escaped with injuries.
The womans relatives told police that she had a troubled relationship with her husband, which might have prompted him to commit the crime.
Acting on a tip-off,police laid a trap near the Bijwasan railway station and Ramesh was arrested.
During questioning,Ramesh revealed that he had married the woman six years ago and was living with two children a son and daughter in his village. He suspected that his wife had illicit relations with his cousin, who had brought them to Delhi earlier for job. He shifted back to his village but because he continued to suspect that his wife did not end her affair with his cousin,he hatched a plan to kill his wife and daughter, said Anil Kumar Ojha,Additional Commissioner of Police (Southwest).
Ramesh confessed that he came to Delhi on June 13 to kill his wife and daughter, Ojha said.
When they were asleep,he killed his daughter by smothering and assaulting her and then attacked his wife. He fled the spot and was caught when he was trying to return to his village.
