A day after the body of five-year-old Mahi was pulled out of the 70 feet deep pit,the Gurgaon district administration on Monday announced measures to prevent such incidents.
Five days after Mahi fell into the pit,the owner of Mahi’s house — Rohtas Tayal — is yet to be arrested. “We are in touch with Delhi Police and have formed teams,which are conducting raids at possible hideouts. Police are also questioning Tayal’s family members. As a last resort,we might even confiscate his property,” said DCP (South) Praveen Mehta.
Deputy Commissioner P C Meena has recommended stern action against the Agricultural Development Officer (ADO) in charge of the area where the incident took place.
“There are 15 ADOs in the district and the ADO in charge of this area has been served notice as he too was responsible for the borewell being left open. Apart from that,the sarpanch of the village will also be issued notice,” Meena told Newsline.
The Gurgaon administration has asked all agencies which dig borewells to get themselves registered by July 10,failing which the agencies will be closed. Officials said few of these agencies are from Gurgaon and most of them are based in Delhi and other adjoining districts.
The administration also plans to start a two-month campaign to check illegal borewells,dismantle them and book responsible.
“I have also decided to write letters to various agencies like MCG,HUDA,police,agricultural department and others and asked them to check for such borewells in their areas and dismantle them. At the same time,we have also decided to call a meeting of Block Development Officers and sarpanches to sensitise them,” said Meena.
Meena said most of these illegal borewells were dug up at night and patrolling could minimise the menace.
