Layered plantations, Miyawaki forests, and aquatic forests: These are among techniques that could be incorporated to maximise the utility of the land in Delhi, L-G V K Saxena announced on Thursday.
The Delhi Lieutenant Governor held a review meeting with officials on the status of afforestation and greening spaces in the Capital.
The L-G has set a target of planting 67 lakh trees and shrubs in 2024-25, according to a statement by the L-G office.
Named after Japanese botanist Akira Miyawaki, this method involves planting two to four different types of indigenous trees within every square metre. In this method, the trees become self-sustaining and they grow to their full length within three years.
According to the statement by L-G office, in 2023, a “massive tree plantation” saw more than 5 lakh trees being planted at Asola Bhati Mines.
In 2023, around one lakh flowering trees, including Cherry Blossom, Chinar, Amaltas and Gulmohar, were planted in the run-up to the G-20 Summit, according to the statement.
For 2024-25, the statement read, Delhi L-G has planned to improve the green cover by utilising spaces around the boundary walls of educational institutions.
Special drives will be launched by the DDA focusing on designating areas in Narela-Bawana region for a green belt and planting fruit-bearing trees in the Ridge and forest areas, according to the statement.
In order to reduce plastic usage, soft pots made from soil and cow dung will be utilised for distribution of saplings, it added.
L-G Saxena also directed coordination between various departments for carrying out and sustaining the plantation drives.
