Police officials, journalists and advocates were among those injured in a clash between police and lawyers at the Karkardooma courts complex on Thursday.
An ACPs Qualis and other police vehicles were pelted with stones and damaged. Senior police officers were at the spot till late evening monitoring the situation.
Lawyers alleged that they were lathicharged when they went to lodge a complaint against an MCD junior engineer (JE) at the Anand Vihar police station.
Police later said that a constable,Manoj, lathicharged the advocates without understanding the gravity of the situation.
But police pointed out that the lawyers had manhandled the JE.
Lawyer Sudesh Sharma, who was at the police station, said,A junior engineer and his labourers barged into the house of Surjeet Kumar, who is our colleague. There was some construction going on at his house. Surjeet was at the court at that time. The JE barged in and misbehaved with the women of the family. Six of us went to the police station with a complaint.
Sharma alleged that they were denied permission to meet the SHO.
Waving a mobile phone video recording of the lathicharge at the police station,Sharma said the police refused to receive their complaint. When we asked why they were not registering a case against the JE,they became abusive and asked us to leave. When we protested, they lathicharged us. We have a video of the lathicharge to prove our claims. I suffered injuries on my neck. A colleague,Vikash Mehan, has been admitted to Hedgewar Hospital, said Sharma.
Surjeet Kumar,in whose house the construction was on,said,The engineer was demanding
Rs 20,000 from us. We refused to pay him a bribe. He came with policemen and started dismantling the construction. We stopped him and went to the police station with him. There, one of the policemen lathicharged us.
Doctors at GTB Hospital said four persons had been brought to the hospital two policemen,a junior engineer and a person referred from Hedgewar Hospital. The JE and the patient from Hedgewar Hospital have been discharged and the two policemen are still with us, a doctor said.
