A 25-year-old labourer died after he fell from the fourth floor of an under-construction EWS apartment in Suncity, a residential society in Gurgaon’s Sector 54, on Sunday.
Police said the labourer reportedly slipped from the fourth floor and fell in the backyard of an adjoining house, where an iron grill pierced his neck. The body was discovered early on Sunday by the resident in whose backyard it had fallen.
Suncity residents alleged that illegal construction of houses for EWS (economically weaker section) led to the death of the labourer. As per the law, EWS houses can only be constructed up to two floors. However, residents alleged, more than 90 per cent of EWS houses in the area have a third and a fourth floor. “Many times, we have seen children of labourers playing on the top floors of under-construction EWS houses… We have brought this to the notice of Directorate of Town and Country Planning many times but to no avail,” said VMK Singh, a resident.
After residents filed multiple complaints, DTP (district town planner) Enforcement reportedly wrote to the station house officer of Sector 55/56 police station, requesting police to look into unauthorised construction in the society. However, residents alleged, no further action was taken.
“It seems to be an accident. We have sent the body for an autopsy. An FIR can be filed only after initial investigation is carried out,” said Rajesh Kumar, ACP (Crime).
