Power Minister Atishi Thursday accused L-G V K Saxena and the BJP of repeatedly pressuring power department officials to stop subsidies extended to the city’s farmers and advocates. The L-G and BJP’s larger objective, Atishi claimed, was to put an end to the power subsidy scheme currently in place in the capital.
The BJP called the allegation “a new lie” and claimed that no such subsidy was being extended to farmers. Raj Niwas did not respond to requests for comment on the allegations.
Displaying purported photocopies of the contents of said file, Atishi claimed, “This morning, I received a file from the power department in which it proposed to discontinue the power subsidy provided by the Kejriwal government to farmers and advocates of Delhi.”
When asked to share the contents of this file, the Delhi government refused to do so, citing legal concerns since these were related to a cabinet decision.
“No matter how many conspiracies are hatched and who passes any file under pressure from the L-G, free electricity for any resident of Delhi will not be stopped as long as CM Arvind Kejriwal’s government is in power,” she added.
Leader of Opposition in the Assembly Ramvir Singh Bidhuri claimed farmers were being charged commercial rates for power even when they did not use electricity on the one hand, while thousands of rupees were being collected from them in the name of a fixed charge on the other.
“She (Atishi) does not know that there is no free electricity scheme for farmers in Delhi. So absurd and baseless are her allegations that when the media asked her who had signed this order, she could not reply,” the LOP alleged.
“Farmers of Delhi have been demanding free electricity for a long time, but far from accepting their demand, they are being charged bills at commercial rates,” Bidhuri alleged.
