The English are not going to like this. Guernsey, second largest of the Channel Islands which lie 80 miles off the English mainland,is as much French as it is English. So much that while English is the language of the masses,French is the legislative language of the Bailiwick of Guernsey of which the island is a part. The Bailiwick, which is a British Crown Dependency (BCD),also includes Alderney,Herm,Jethou,Brecqhou,Burhou,Lihou,Sark and other islets.
A bailiwick is the area of jurisdiction of a bailiff apart from Guernsey,Jersey is the other bailiwick which is a BCD. A BCD is a possession of the Crown, and is not part of the UK. Consequently,Guernsey is not a member of the European Union. The bailiwick,a remnant of the Duchy of Normandy, was the only British soil occupied by the Nazis. Hauteville House,a house where Victor Hugo lived during his exile from France,is a minor celebrity on Guernsey Island.
Guernsey participates in its own right in the Commonwealth Games, and has been a part of every CWG since its debut in the 1970 Edinburgh Games. It has won six CWG medals, and all but one came in shooting events. The odd-one-out is a bronze won in the 1986 Edinburgh Games by its Womens Lawn Bowls Doubles team. Guernseys last medal was a Mens Rapid Fire Pistol bronze won in the 1994 Victoria Games.
