The CIA World Factbook describes the islanders’ ethnicity as “90% Black”,with the remainder Mixed,European or of North American ancestry.

The people of the Turks and Caicos Islands are called “Turks and Caicos Islanders”.

The Turks and Caicos Islands are a British Overseas Territory (BOT) consisting of two groups of the West Indian tropical islands — the larger Caicos Islands and the smaller Turks

Islands. The 14 BOTs are remnants of the British Empire, having either voted to remain British territories or not acquired independence yet. Turks and Caicos Islands fall in the latter category,as its 2006 mandate towards self-government was suspended for two years in 2009 by the United Kingdom after allegations of corruption against the newly elected government. Bahamas lies to the north of Turks and Caicos Islands and the Dominican Islands to its south.

The islands made their CWG debut in the 1978 Commonwealth Games in Edmonton. After a long hiatus, they returned in 1998,and have been a part of the next two Games. They are, however, yet to win their first Games medal.

Tourism is a major source of revenue, and it helps to be near the US. Bruce Willis owns a home on the islands. Movie stars Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner married on Parrot Cay in 2005.
