The Delhi Police have found a knife in the Vasant Kunj area, where Shobhit Modi (20) was found with multiple stab wounds on May 5.
Police said the knife has been sent for forensic examination and they cannot ascertain if it is the murder weapon yet.
According to police, crucial evidence in the case was also lost due to rain at the crime scene on Thursday.
An injured Shobhit was found by the security guard of C5,Vasant Kunj. He was metres away from his house when he collapsed at the gates of the colony.
“We could not lift any fingerprints or footprints from the scene of crime as rain had washed them away,” said a senior police officer.
Police have also found that some call data from Shobhit’s mobile phone had been deleted. They are looking at whether it happened as the security guard tried to dial his parents or was the data deleted on purpose.
Police said they were questioning a close friend of Shobhit. The role of 12 other friends, who were picked up for questioning, has been ruled out.
“We are looking at a former schoolmate who moved around in an SUV,carried four expensive mobile phones and always had a large amount of cash on him,” said the officer.
Police said besides looking at the “personal angle”,they are also probing the role of “professional criminals”. They have formed a team to track the movement of known criminals, living in the nearby areas,on the day of crime.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Chhaya Sharma said: “So far we do not have any eyewitnesses. We had picked up around 20 of Shobhit’s friends, involvement of at least 12 of them has been ruled out.”
The Crime Branch of Delhi Police also joined the investigations on Monday.
