Walking through the dingy lanes of Jahangirpuri, one arrives at the house of Laxmi,a Kinnar, who has been living in Delhi for ages now.

Sitting in her well-decorated office-cum-residence,she talks about Delhi changing over the years and the problems her community has to live with.

“Parties make a thousand promises, but leaders forget all about them after the poll season,” she says. She now wants change as the Congress fooling people for a long time she says.

“We want a government that can work for the people and we want leaders who care about society and not just about their families. I think only the BJP can form that kind of government,” says Laxmi, who is also the president of the All India Kinnar Association.

Many members are campaigning for the BJP’s Northwest Delhi candidate Meera Kanwaria. Laxmi claims that there are around 15,000 Kinnars in Northwest Delhi alone while their total population in Delhi is around 40,000.

“Most of us have voter I-cards now. We will ask all Kinnars to vote for the BJP,” says Laxmi.

Mani, another Kinnar, says,“We do not want anything special for us. Prices of essential commodities should not rise to this extent, the common man should be treated properly and the police should behave well with us.”

Meera Kanwaria has met them personally in her campaign in the last two days.

“They should be treated like everybody else in society. I will help them get their rights,” said Kanwaria.

Laxmi says police harassment is a problem they face on an everyday basis. “The police arrest us unnecessarily even when we are not involved in any crime. The authorities have recently stopped our gas supply. Crime against women is on the rise in Delhi. If the Congress cannot make women feel safe, then they do not deserve to be in power. If there is somebody who can improve the law and order situation,it is Advaniji,” said Laxmi. Laxmi also lashed out at Sandeep Dikshit, who was the MP from this area. “He never visited his constituency and it will be the same if Krishna Tirath wins.”

BJP Councillor from Jahangirpuri,Ramesh Chauhan said,“We have been working for better living conditions of Kinnars in our area and we will continue the same”.
