Wanted gangster and extortionist Vikas Lagarpuria was nabbed Saturday night from Dwarka, police said. He has 12 cases of murder, attempt to murder, robbery and extortion registered against him. He had walked out of prison only in February this year, police said.
Police claimed Vikas Gulia (alias Vikas Lagarpuria) is the kingpin of a gang of extortionists and sharpshooters operating in the NCR and neighbouring states. The latest hunt for Lagarpuria was sparked by two cases. On April 13, he and some associates allegedly attacked a man in order to extort money from him. A case was registered in Baba Haridas Nagar police station. Police received information the same day about a firing in Najafgarh. The complainant alleged that he had received calls from a gangster, who was demanding Rs 25 lakh as “protection money”. A case was registered at Chawala police station and a probe began.
“Investigations into the two cases led police to Lagarpuria, who was being directed on the targets by his associate Dheerpal, currently lodged in Bhondsi jail. A few associates of Lagarpuria were arrested at different times over the last few months in connection with the two extortion cases. Lagarpuria, however, had been evading arrest, hiding at various locations in Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana and Delhi,” DCP (southwest) R A Sanjeev said.
Sanjeev said police received information that Lagarpuria would be at Janta flats in Sector 16-B Dwarka around 7.30 pm on Saturday to meet an associate. Police set up a decoy and apprehended him at 7.45 pm.
An officer said Lagarpuria never used cellphones, so tracking him was hard. A large network of human intelligence was required to trace him to Dwarka from where his gang was operating. “We also raided his house in Ballabgarh five times since we got on his trail. He is rich and has a big fortified house in Ballabgarh. In fact, his house, fitted with CCTVs, has been transformed into a fortress. Police never found him there,” the officer said.
Lagarpuria, a resident of Haryana’s Jhajjar and a dropout from Ramlal Anand College, Delhi University, loved wearing expensive clothes, driving fancy cars and using sophisticated weaponry. In 2009, he came in contact with Dheerpal. Lagarpuria was arrested in 2012 on charges of murder along with Dheerpal. He, however, walked out on bail in 2013. He was again arrested and jailed till he walked out on bail in February this year.
