Kid’s Corner

McDonald’s Happy Meal may be passe but the platter has moved to Delhi’s chic restaurants as some innovative chefs try to lure the children in.

Restaurants have come up with kids’ menus especially for the summer vacation

McDonald’s Happy Meal may be passe but the platter has moved to Delhi’s chic restaurants as some innovative chefs try to lure the children in. How about menus with cartoon characters holding up a delicious-looking dish of pasta? Or miniature sushi rolls or pizza triangles set on colourful plates?

At the Japanese-specialty diner Ai at The Metropolitan Hotel in Saket, you can ask for a special kids’ menu for lunch. It lists Crumb Fried Tofu (Rs 249),which accompanies an array of colourful sweet dips and a basket of crackers. Then there is sushi (Rs 399),especially made to appeal to young taste buds. “We are perking up the classic sushi rolls with colourful bell peppers and cooked meats to appeal to children,” says Chef Saby who heads the kitchen. “Mothers bring their kids to the mall for shopping and eating out. So we thought, why not a separate menu for kids that’s cost effective as well?” he adds.

The poolside restaurant La Terraza at Tivoli Garden Hotel is making sure that their young clients keep coming back. The restaurant is pairing aqua sports for kids with a scrumptious buffet. At Rs 350 (plus taxes),there is Happy Kids Bonanza in which your child will be pampered with Strawberry Lassi and Pineapple Cookie Shake, apart from fruit tarts and baby muffins for nibbles, and a main course that serves pizza laden with a healthy serving of broccoli and asparagus. And if parents are keen on going out for dinner, the restaurant will offer 15 per cent discount on the bill if the child is dining with them. “A plate of sandwiches and cookies is served complimentary for the child. We have also included large quantities of veggies for nutrition,” says Sankarjit Baral, who heads the F&B department of Tivoli Gardens Resort. But it is not all greens. “We are also stocking up on nachos and potato wedges which are popular with children,” says Baral.

Meanwhile,The Yum Yum Tree has come up with some innovative activities for children. “Every Sunday afternoon,we have classes for painting, handbag making, pottery and cricket bat designing,” says owner Varun Tuli. And once the paintings and pots are ready,a lavish buffet with noodles, grilled vegetables and colourful mocktails are rolled out along with a complimentary goodies bag for each child. This comes for Rs 450 plus taxes.

The multi-cuisine diner Eatopia at the India Habitat Centre is offering a 15 per cent discount on meals for kids who are enrolled at the summer workshops.

While there is no separate kids’ menu being handed out at the American diner Route 04 in Khan Market, you can always ask for a kid’s portion for some of their dishes. “Mac n Cheese and breakfast combos can be easily converted into a smaller portion and they are priced 20 per cent less than their regular rates,” says food consultant Sonia Mohindra, who introduced small portions after regular requests from parents. At Café Style in Noida,a special kids’ menu will be rolled out by the month-end. “The diner does not serve liquor and parents usually take their kids to Café Style. We are printing the menu with colourful animated characters and it will offer dishes that are popular with children,” adds Mohindra.
