The selection process to pick the new AIIMS Director is likely to begin next week. Nearly 70 names are in the running,including 30 AIIMS doctors.
The present AIIMS Director,Dr R C Deka will retire at the end of September after a four-and-half year tenure.
We have received around 70 applications for the Directors post. The (selection) process has started, Dr Deka told Newsline.
This year,a two-week extension was given for the application process,which was originally scheduled to close at the end of July. But the last date to submit applications was extended till August 14.
Sources said notifications had been issued to members of the search committee a committee of experts from science and higher education fields. None on the selection board will be allowed to nominate any member.
The committee which will be chaired by Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad,who is also the president of AIIMS includes Dinesh Singh (Delhi University V-C),Keshav Desiraju (Secretary,Health Ministry),representatives from the University Grants Commission (UGC),the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR),the National Board of Examinations (NBE) and the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR),besides one noted scientist and teacher in medicine from a government medical college.
Sources said the committee will shortlist two names from the huge pool of applications. Both the names will then be forwarded to AIIMS Institute Body,which will make the final selection and send it for Cabinet approval.
Sources in the health ministry said in the event of the selection process stretching over one month,one section was pushing for a few months extension for Dr Deka.
Among the applicants are several AIIMS doctors on deputation now,for instance Dr D K Gupta,former HoD of paediatric surgery at AIIMS,who is now on deputation as the VC of King Georges Medical University in Lucknow since April 2011.
Sources told Newsline that at least 30 applications were from doctors of the institute,including HoDs of several departments and chiefs of centres,who include Dr M C Misra,head of surgery and chief of trauma centre,Dr Y K Gupta,head of pharmacology,Dr V K Behl,head of cardiology,Dr S K Acharya,head of gastroenterology,Dr V K Paul,head of paediatrics,Dr S K Panda,head of pathology,and other senior doctors in oncology,opthalmology,cardiac surgery,anesthesia and paediatric surgery departments.
