Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal will address auto-rickshaw drivers at a ‘mahasabha’ (grand gathering) in Burari on Friday. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) credits auto-rickshaw drivers of the city with playing a big role in the success of the party in the Assembly elections.

At the mahasabha, the chief minister will hear the grievances of the drivers and the demands raised by them. Unions representing auto-rickshaw drivers in the city have been demanding redressal of a number of issues, including alleged harassment by traffic police. Other demands include replacement of auto-rickshaws which are more than 15 years old and proper stands to park the three-wheelers.

“We have taken several measures for auto drivers, including issuing over 5,000 fresh NCR permits and have been talking to them to resolve their problems. Auto unions were also keen to felicitate the chief minister. So, this is strictly not a government function, but the CM will be addressing the mahasabha,” a government official said.

“The auto drivers of Delhi stood by the Aam Aadmi Party when very few believed that we could actually win more than a handful of seats,” he said.

Auto unions affiliated to the BJP and the Congress, however, said they had not received any invitation for the function. “We will not attend the event. We have not received any invitation from the government for the mahasabha and have written to the L-G on how the government was not taking the main unions into confidence in any of their decisions. We also plan to go on a hunger strike,” Kishan Verma, president of the All Delhi Auto Taxi Transporters Congress Union, said.

“If some unions are unhappy, it is because there are too many unions in the city… If some unions feel left out, it is for them to resolve it among themselves,” a government official said.
